Talk Like a Pirate Day Shanty is my annual salute to one of the most gloriously unnecessary holidays on the calendar.
To most people, International Talk Like a Pirate Day is a chance to toss out an occasional “Arrr!” and move on with their lives. To those of us who already speak fluent pirate, it is something much more important: a full day to showcase our linguistic superpowers.
This shanty leans all the way into the fun, with hearty crews, raised mugs, Jolly Rogers, treasure hunts, tall tales, taverns, cannons, and enough “yo-ho” to make even the most landlocked soul consider joining a crew.
“Raise yer voices high, it’s Talk Like a Pirate Day!”
The song is not meant to take piracy too seriously. It is about the playful side of pirate culture: the camaraderie, costumes, storytelling, exaggerated accents, and the simple joy of giving everyday language a little more swagger.
For one day, boring greetings become “Ahoy,” friends become “me hearties,” and absolutely every sentence sounds better when delivered with unnecessary confidence and at least one well-placed “Arrr.”
