My Match Story

My name is Howie Taylor, a 55+ year-old web developer, husband, and father of 2 grown girls. But in 2014, my life took a devastating turn when my younger brother passed away. The grief was overwhelming, especially since my two girls had already grown up and moved out of the house, leaving me feeling like an empty nester. I fell into a deep depression, desperately searching for something meaningful to fill my time.

One afternoon, while sitting in a Dairy Queen, I noticed a flyer on the community board advertising Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay and their upcoming Big Orientation Training. With my evenings now free, I decided to attend the training and learn more about the organization. It was like a sign from above. I immediately knew that this was exactly what I needed in my life, so I wasted no time and signed up on the spot.

On September 1, 2016, I was introduced to my first Little, Hunter. He was a 12-year old boy whose mother was incarcerated, so he lived with his grandparents. At first, all Hunter did was play video games alone in his bedroom. But as we got to know each other, I discovered his talent for hand-eye coordination while watching him play. I decided to take him out to a park and introduced him to the thrill of flying a drone. To my surprise, Hunter was a natural!

Over the course of the next 6 years, I became more than just a mentor to Hunter. I taught him how to ride a bike, helped him develop critical thinking skills, and nurtured a sense of gratitude within him. Our time together extended beyond volunteer events and included activities like fishing, attending ball games and monster truck rallies, and much more. Together, we tackled homework, practiced self-reflection, and worked on anger control. The more we explored the world together, the more Hunter opened up, realizing there was so much more to life outside of his bedroom.

In 2019, Hunter and I were honored as Big and Little of the Year by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay. We proudly participated in the Gala and were even given the privilege of throwing out the first ball at a Rays baseball game. Seeing Hunter graduate high school and become a responsible member of society filled me with immense pride. Although he has aged out of the program, our connection remains strong, and he still seeks my guidance from time to time.

Now, I am matched with my current Little, Elijah. A spunky, energetic young man with impeccable manners. Living less than a mile and a half away from my home, our get-togethers are incredibly convenient. We ride bikes between our houses effortlessly, creating an instant bond. Elijah has a wild imagination and a passion for math. He finds joy in accompanying me to car shows, theme parks, and sporting events. From the very beginning, he has shown immense gratitude for every experience we share. Elijah dreams of becoming an engineer as he grows older, so we spend time doing homework together on his front porch, and he feels a great sense of pride and excitement when he finishes his assignments.

Elijah's enthusiasm for volunteering and fundraising matches my own. Last Christmas, we collected numerous gifts for a large disadvantaged family and delivered them in supercars, bringing joy to their lives. Even though we haven't been matched for long, we have already created countless memories together, from thrilling trips to Lego Land to parades to peaceful fishing excursions and Buccaneers football games. Elijah fully understands the incredible opportunities he has been given, and he never hesitates to express his gratitude.

I firmly believe that Elijah has an extraordinary future ahead of him, and I am honored to play a part in it. Through my journey as a mentor, I have personally grown in ways I never expected. This program has taught me the virtues of patience, gratitude, and understanding. I now understand that these mentoring relationships require time and support from legislators and the public to truly inspire potential. It is a legacy that I am immensely proud to be a part of.
