The Story

Reese Came Home

On July 1, 2026 at 5:30 PM, we said goodbye to Reese.

Years ago, she showed up as a stray on our daughter’s back porch.

We thought we were going to rescue her.

Within a few weeks, it became pretty clear that Reese had come to rescue us.

We thought we rescued Reese. In the end, we realized Reese had rescued us.

Reese was never a high-energy dog.

She had two very simple goals in life:

Eating.

Loving.

And she was exceptionally good at both.

She tolerated the other family dogs, loved her people completely, and had absolutely no understanding of personal space.

If Karen curled up on the couch, Reese was beside her within minutes.

If you were not touching Reese, that was fine.

Reese would simply come touch you.

Usually with one of her famous, slightly awkward “crotch hugs.”

Reese did not need much from life. A meal, a soft place to lie down, and someone close enough to love.

She had a quiet way of making a house feel warmer.

She was not flashy.

She did not need to be the center of attention.

She just wanted to be near her people.

And somehow, that gentle presence became part of the rhythm of our home.

In her final season, Reese developed Canine Cognitive Dysfunction, often called dog dementia.

Watching her change was heartbreaking.

The dog we knew was still there, but more and more often, she seemed lost inside a world that no longer made sense to her.

Eventually, our family had to make the decision nobody ever wants to make.

Love is not always holding on. Sometimes love is knowing when it is time to help them rest.

That is where Reese Came Home came from.

It is a tribute to a sweet, gentle girl who wandered onto a porch and somehow found her way into the middle of our hearts.

A dog who arrived as a stray and became family.

Comfort.

Companionship.

Love with paws.

She was never “just a dog.”

She was Reese.

You were never lost, sweet girl. You were finding your way home.

Run easy, Reese.

Find the sunshine.

Find the porch.

Find a soft place to rest.

You came home.

And you changed us forever.

The Lyrics

Reese Came Home

Intro

Gentle strums, the tale unfolds, a love story in the silence

Verse 1

She showed up on the back porch, white as morning light,
No collar, no warning, just a stranger in the night.
Our daughter saw a heartbeat behind those gentle eyes,
Pinned her up and made some flyers, hoping someone would reply.

But no one came to claim her, no footsteps down the drive,
Just a beautiful little lost girl learning how to trust and try.
And somehow in the silence, where the unanswered questions roam,
She wasn’t really missing, she was finding her way home.

Pre-Chorus

The heart knows in whispers, in the life that we create,
Every paw that wanders finds a reason to relate.

Chorus

Reese came home, with a quiet kind of grace,
A soft white coat, a loving heart, and sunshine on her face.
She never asked for anything, but gave us all she had,
The kind of love that saves you, even when it hurts this bad.
We thought we rescued Reese, but now we know,
She came to rescue us, then Reese came home.

Verse 2

We named her after candy, like the good ones always do,
Sweet enough to melt your heart, loyal through and through.
She wasn’t built for running, she was made for laying near,
For leaning into every touch and chasing off our tears.
Across our land she wandered, but never far away,
She found her favorite corners, her naps, her sunny place.
And everyone who met her felt the kindness in her soul,
She made a house feel warmer without even trying to.

Bridge

Now the years have turned against her, and her body’s grown so tired,
The spark is still inside her, but it’s fading like a fire.
And love is not just holding on when goodbye feels unfair,
Sometimes love is mercy, whispered softly through a prayer.

Outro

So run easy, sweet Reese, where the green fields never end,
Find the porch, find the sunlight, find the ones we’ll meet again.
You were loved every moment, from the first day to the last,
Our beautiful white angel, our gift that came to pass.
You were never just a stray, and you were never alone,
Reese came to rescue us,
Then Reese came home.
