I Know That!

Inspired by my granddaughter as she approaches two years old, “I Know That!” is a playful little peek inside the mind of a toddler discovering the world one word, one reaction, and one tiny victory at a time. It’s funny, curious, stubborn, sweet, and full of those moments where you can almost see the wheels turning as she learns what things mean, what she can do, and—most importantly—how much she loves Mama.

About the Song

I Know That!

“I Know That!” was inspired by that wonderfully busy stage of toddlerhood when every day seems to come with a new word, a new discovery, a new opinion, and at least one completely unnecessary experiment involving gravity.

This song looks at the world through the eyes of a two-year-old little girl who is learning how everything works one tiny piece at a time. People have names. Toys make noises. French fries are good. Green things are suspicious. Buttons need to be pushed. Cups can be dropped. Bedtime is negotiable. And if something works once, there is a very good chance it needs to be tested again immediately.

“This whole big world keeps showing me things I know today.”

Underneath all of the funny little discoveries, though, the song is really about something bigger. It is about watching a child begin to understand not just objects and words, but feelings, reactions, boundaries, comfort, and love. Sometimes she gets it right. Sometimes she gets the look. Sometimes she tries a hug to see if that fixes everything.

And by the end of the day, after all the learning, independence, frustration, laughter, and “Nope, not those pajamas,” the biggest thing she knows is also the simplest: Mama is still there.

Tomorrow there will be new words, new things, and new stuff to figure out. But tonight, there is one thing she already knows for sure.

The Lyrics

I Know That!

Verse 1

Mama.
Nana.
Papa too.
Hazel.
Cat.
Puppy—woo!
Up means high.
Down means floor.
I learned that one.
Now I know more.
Dory!
Nemo!
Toys on TV.
You better turn it on
When I point and say, “See!”

Pre-Chorus

Every day there’s something new,
Something I can say or do.
Everybody smiles at me
When I get it right.

Chorus

I know that!
I know that!
I seen that thing before.
I know that!
I know that!
And now I know some more.
I can point.
I can say.
I can run the other way.
This whole big world keeps showing me
Things I know today.

Verse 2

What dat?
New toy.
Give it here.
I turn it over.
Shake it near my ear.
Push this button.
It made a sound!
I drop it once.
It hit the ground.
Do it again.
No—wait.
Nope.
Don’t like that part.
I look at Mama.
Mama smiles.
Okay.
Back to start.

Pre-Chorus

Every day there’s something new,
Something I can make it do.
If I don’t know what it is,
I’m gonna find out soon.

Chorus

I know that!
I know that!
I figured something out.
I know that!
I know that!
That’s what I’m talking ’bout.
I can shake.
I can spin.
I can make it start again.
This whole big world keeps showing me
What this thing can do.

Verse 3

Restaurant.
Big chair.
Everybody everywhere.
Spoon goes bang.
Mama says, “No.”
Oh.
I know that face.
French fry?
Yes.
Green thing?
No.
Put that back in its place.
Straw comes out.
Cup goes down.
Everybody looks around.
Baby over there sees me.
I wave.
Now we’re friends.

Chorus

I know that!
I know that!
French fries are for me.
I know that!
I know that!
Dory’s on that tee!
I can drop.
You pick it up.
Then I drop it once again.
This whole big world is funny
When you’re sitting way up high.

Verse 4

Sometimes I hit.
Everybody stops.
I smile.
Nobody smiles back.
Mama says, “No.”
Papa looks sad.
Uh-oh.
I think I did that bad.
Maybe hug?
Maybe kiss?
Maybe this will fix it.
I put my little arms around—
Okay.
That feels right.

Bridge

Some things make you laugh.
Some things make you cry.
Some things make Mama smile.
Some things get that eye.
Sometimes I don’t know why
Everybody looks like that.
But when I see that Mama face...
Oh.
I know that.

Verse 5

Wednesday night.
No bed!
No sleepy!
Hungry!
Diaper!
Pajamas?
No.
Not those.
Other ones.
Nope.
That’s enough.
Brush my teeth.
I do it.
No help.
Mine.
I chew the brush.
Mama tries.
I twist away.
Not bedtime.
Not today.
Then I’m mad.
Then I’m sad.
Then I’m mad that I got sad.
Up.
Mama picks me up.
Okay.
That’s not bad.

Final Chorus

I know that!
I know that!
Mama holds me tight.
I know that!
I know that!
Papa says goodnight.
Puppy sleeps.
Lights go low.
Where does everybody go?
I keep my hand on Mama’s shirt
Just so I always know.
I know that.
I know that.
Mama’s still right there.
I close my eyes
Just for a minute...
Still right there.

Outro

Tomorrow I’ll know something new.
New words.
New things.
New stuff I can do.
But tonight...
Mama...
I know I love you.
