Broken Hands

Broken Hands is one of the most personal songs I’ve worked on. This song is about looking back honestly.

The Story

What We Carry, and What We Leave Behind

It is about looking back honestly.

Not pretending you were perfect.

Not trying to erase the past.

Not polishing every rough edge until the story becomes easier to tell.

It is about the truth that all of us carry things.

Mistakes.

Regrets.

Hard seasons.

Broken moments.

Choices we wish we could take back.

But Broken Hands is also about grace.

For the video, I wanted every image to feel like a memory being pulled from an old wooden box.

I built the story piece by piece: the empty road, old photographs, cracked glass, an open door, the people who stayed, family around the table, helping hands, and finally a porch light still glowing in the dark.

The images were created with help from ChatGPT, but the memories, emotions, and questions behind them were deeply personal.

Somewhere along the way, the process became more than just creating visuals for a song.

It became a reminder that legacy is rarely built from grand gestures or perfect lives.

It is built in ordinary moments.

Holding a door.

Showing up.

Listening.

Helping someone stand.

Coming back through the door when it would have been easier to stay away.

Broken Hands is not about being a hero. It is about trying.

Trying to love better.

Trying to make peace with the person you’ve been.

Trying to leave behind something good.

Trying to make sure the people you love never had to face the dark alone.

One of the central questions in the song is what people will remember when the story is over.

The mistakes?

The regrets?

Or the effort to become something better?

My hope is that this song reaches anyone who has ever wondered whether their past disqualifies them from doing good now.

Broken hands can still build.
Broken hands can still help.
Broken hands can still hold.
Broken hands can still point someone toward the light.

Maybe grace is not pretending the past never happened.

Maybe it is knowing all of it, owning it, and still choosing what comes next.

And maybe, in the end, being able to say “I wasn’t perfect, but I tried” is a legacy worth leaving behind.

The Lyrics

Broken Hands

Verse 1

I’ve carried things I never say
Down roads I wish I’d never taken
There are chapters of my life
I’d give anything to have forsaken
But the people who know me best
Still somehow choose to stay
They know the man behind the mask
And love me anyway

Pre-Chorus

So I wonder when the story ends
What will anybody see?
The things I wish I’d never done
Or the man I’m trying to be?

Chorus

I don’t need a statue in the town
I don’t need my name carved into stone
I just want the good I’ve left behind
To tell somebody they weren’t alone
If I gave a little more than I took
If I helped somebody find their way
Maybe that’s a legacy
Maybe that’s enough someday

Verse 2

Sometimes I do a little good
To make peace with what I’ve done
Like every act of kindness
Could erase another one
And I don’t know if that’s redemption
Or just another way to hide
But if doing good for all the wrong reasons
Still leaves good behind
Maybe that’s worth something
Maybe that’s the point
Maybe broken hands can still
Reach out and lift somebody up

Pre-Chorus

I ask myself the questions
That I never say aloud:
Am I humble? Am I foolish?
Am I trying to make myself proud?
Am I worthy of the love I have?
God knows I don’t know why
But I keep trying to become the man
I hope they see when I die

Chorus

I don’t need a statue in the town
I don’t need my name carved into stone
I just want the good I’ve left behind
To tell somebody they weren’t alone
If I gave a little more than I took
If I helped somebody find their way
Maybe that’s a legacy
Maybe that’s enough someday

Bridge

There are secrets that we carry
There are truths we leave unsaid
Not because we’ve forgotten
But because we’ve chosen what comes next instead
And maybe grace is not pretending
That the past was never there
Maybe grace is knowing all of it
And choosing still to care

So when they tell my story
Don’t make me more than I was
Don’t call me something I wasn’t
Don’t paint me without the flaws
Just say I kept on trying
When I didn’t think I could
Say I wasn’t always worthy
But I always wanted to be good

Final Chorus

I don’t need a statue in the town
I don’t need my name carved into stone
If the people that I loved the most
Can say they never felt alone
If something I said or something I did
Helped somebody through their darkest day
Then maybe I left something here
That time can’t take away

Outro

I won’t pretend I was a hero
I know the man I’ve been
But if the good outlives the bad
Maybe I get to begin again
And when they lay me down someday
I hope the ones I loved can say—
He wasn’t perfect…
But he tried.
God, how he tried.
And maybe that’s his legacy.
